CNET’s expert staff reviews and evaluates dozens of new products and services each month, drawing on more than a quarter century of expertise.

Whether you’re a frequent traveler or constantly losing things, you should invest in an Apple AirTag. This compact tracking device will help you find your lost checked luggage, car keys or even your pet’s collar. However, you will probably need something to hold your AirTag and attach it to your item. We narrowed down the huge variety of key rings and cases to only the best Apple AirTag accessories.

You don’t always need an accessory to use an Apple AirTag. In some cases, you can simply attach the tag to anything you want to keep track of, such as your bag or backpack. In some cases, an attachment would work better, like with keys or a laptop bag where you don’t want things to move around too much. If you want to attach your AirTag to an object, there are many AirTag mounts available.

Note that CNET editors have tested most, but not all, of these accessories. If we haven’t tried a product, we’ve tested other accessories from those companies, so we feel comfortable recommending these. We will be adding more Apple AirTag accessories to the list as we test new products.

Key chains and belts

One of the best AirTag accessories, Belkin’s secure holder for AirTags comes in key or strap versions with four color options. There’s nothing terribly fancy about them, but at $13, both cost less than the Apple-branded options shown below. You can also get a two-pack for $20.

While it launched a bit later than some Apple AirTag accessories, Otterbox’s keychain holder, which Otterbox calls the “Shattered Case,” is made of hard plastic and actually wraps around your AirTag (you unscrew the top, place your AirTag in the case, then screw the top back to lock the AirTag into the holder).

While this affordable faux leather key ring from Cyrill, a sub-brand of Korea-based Spigen, is nothing fancy, it is available in a premium black and gold finish. You can also view the rest of Cyrill’s collection on Amazon.

The Apple-branded leather backing costs about $35 and is available in several color options, though you may find limited stock of FineWoven replacements coming to stores.

If you’re looking for a value option, your best bet may be to roll the dice on a no-name brand on Amazon. This Eusty Keychain Cap is available in a four-pack for just under $10. Often, generic models like this are labeled as “leather” when they’re actually faux leather (sometimes referred to as PU leather or vegan leather). These look a lot like other AirTag faux leather key chains and come in several color options.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of generic AirTag holders available. Most should be fine, but don’t expect them to wear as well over time as genuine leather models.

Caseology’s AirTag Vault is another simple keychain option that’s affordable at $15, but can shave a few bucks off its price over time. (Caseology is also a sub-brand of Spigen.) It’s one of the few Apple AirTag accessories that was available at launch, and it’s been quite popular as a result. It comes with a carabiner, but you can attach a standard key chain if you want.

Spigen is also selling an attractive simple Apple AirTag keychain holder, the Valentinus, for about $14. It is made of artificial leather.

If you’re looking for a mount that attaches to an object (like the bottom of a bike or scooter seat), the Pelican Stick-on AirTag mount is designed to do just that. A single mount costs $18 while a four-pack sells for $50 or less when on sale. It is available in different colors.

Apple’s Loop, designed to attach your AirTag to a bag, costs the same as an AirTag. But it’s Apple’s official loop option, and this polyurethane option is cheaper than the $35 leather one. (That doesn’t make it a good deal, but I’m just pointing it out.) It’s available in four different colors.

I like the Nomad’s AirTag leather keychain design better than Apple’s, which leaves the AirTag partially exposed. This AirTag keychain hides it and looks more like a standard keychain. It’s designed to “mould” over time, getting darker (especially the brown version). It’s available in brown or black for $30, which is pricey, but it’s nice.

Nomad also makes a leather loop that is also a key chain and lists for $10. I prefer the more expensive model shown here.

Spigen, known for its premium iPhone cases, has the tough armor of the Apple AirTag case. It’s not as cheap as we’d hoped, but it will probably come down in price over time. It has a rugged design with a nice carabiner and carbon fiber elements.

Casetify has a wide variety of AirTag holders. They are made of hard plastic and are quite simple, but have some attractive art on the back. You can also personalize them with your name or choose from several emojis and other graphics. They cost $38, but sometimes go on sale.

Other AirTag options

Moment, which makes and sells photo and video accessories for Apple products, including lens attachments, will have a locking accessory that lets you mount the Apple AirTag. “Made from a tough shell of aramid yarn and backed with a super strong adhesive, you can stick an AirTag to any flat surface,” says Moment.

Moment also has the Stretch Fabric Mount for AirTags ($20) that’s designed to stick to fabrics, like the inside of a bag and other flat surfaces.

If you don’t want to spend $15-20 on a mount, these Gorilla mounting tape squares are a cheaper option and can be cut to size for AirTags. AirTags have an IPX67 water resistance rating, meaning they can be fully submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes and are dustproof. So it can take some punishment without a cover. After all, it does not have a screen.

The AirTag uses a CR2032 coin battery, which should last about a year. You can find a pack of 10 batteries on Amazon for around $12. This is the way to go, especially if you have a lot of AirTags and other devices that use CR2032 coin batteries.

Always remember to keep coin batteries away from small children so they don’t accidentally swallow one. They can cause serious injury if swallowed.
